DIGITWHIZ.COM This app and website are free. They include Common Core based assessments that students take. Teachers are able to collect data from those assessments and assign specific objectives for each student to practice through games and rote practice. The app includes the same access to everything on the website. SUMDOG.COM/SUMDOG APP The free app only includes one math game-it is not the best. However, the free website allows teachers in elementary and grades 6/7 to assign specific standards for their students to practice. This is VERY high interest for students. Also includes regional and national competitions for students to participate in. Teachers are able to see how active students are and that they are on task as they play. MONKEY IN THE MIDDLE APPS These are free apps (you can buy a more involved one for just 99 cents) for 7th grade, 6th grade, 8th grade, and Algebra. They have students play games as they answer specific objectives in questions. When they master one objective, they move on to another. MATHMETEER APP This free app works on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts through games. This would be good for grades 1-8, as there are three levels from which to choose. TENMARKS.COM A free math website that works extremely well for collecting real-time data on students. Questions are based on the Common Core standards and have “common core type” questions for students to practice. It is a good way for students to get used to this new type of testing as well as testing on computers. You can pick which standards you would like your students to cover each time you visit the site and individualize standards for students and/or classes. DESMOS.COM/CALCULATOR Provides students with virtual graph paper to work on their graphing skills. Included is a calculator and tools to work with functions. ILLUMINATIONS.NCTM.ORG This website contains many tools which allow students to work with various mathematical concepts. Examples include advanced data grapher, algebra tiles, and coin box. Great for students of all ages. YUMMYMATH.COM Makes math meaningful by applying math concepts to real world events such as the NCAA brackets, and St. Patrick’s Day. Math activities are listed according to grade level. MRNUSSBAUM.COM Mainly for the elementary math teacher, math activities include don this website are listed by grade level. Lots of options for math games here! GEOGEBRA.ORG Contains resources illustrating how math has been used by people all over the world. Provides “out of the box” applications to mathematical concepts. Language Arts SUMDOG READING/WRITING These websites charge a fee per student. They ae high interest, much like the math sumdog website. Teachers are able to assign specific objectives for students to practice. LEXILE.COM This website provides information about lexile levels of books and has a “search” function that allows teachers to determine the lexile score of any book. BLOGSY With this app, you can create and post to your blog from your ipad. Blogsy has a number of additional features as well such as drag and drop media from applications such as Facebook and Picasa. This app also allows users to work wih multiple blog accounts as well. VOCABULARY/SPELLING CITY This resource is a fun way to learn spelling and vocabulary words by playing engaging learning games using any word list. SHAKE-A-PHRASE Shake-a-Phrase is a fun language app for creative writing prompts, vocabulary, an parts of speech practice. Perfect for learning and laughing in the classroom or on-the-go, it features over 2,000 words and definitions in five engaging themes for ages 8+. Social Studies STACK THE STATES/STACK THE COUNTRIES Students are asked specific questions about United States geography OR countries around the world (capitals, borders, etc). when they get a question correct, they work to stack the states/countries on top of each other so they don’t fall-very high interest. WORLD HISTORY TEST PREP APP This free app includes 34 different sections-from “foundations of civilization” to “the world today”. Each section has a review section that students can read, flash cards that students can quiz themselves, and a quiz over the material. This would be appropriate for middle and high school students. FANTASYGEOPOLITICS.COM A social learning game that follows countries and world leaders as they compete for news headlines-much like a fantasy football league. HISTORY ATLAS A free app, history atlas provides timelines for all parts of the world. Enter a time period and part of the world and see what civilizations existed there. Graphics are phenomenal! RELIGIONFACTS.COM Teaching world religions? This website is a “one-stop shop” for all the religions of the world. Very comprehensive. READWRITETHINK.ORG This website has many ELA connections such as crating persuasive maps, but also has a feature in which students can make their own timelines. TIMEFORKIDS.COM A website that allows students to say up on current events. Students can also research countries from all parts of the world. Students in other countries are also featured! GOOGLE EARTH A great way for students to take virtual field trips and learn about any part of the world. Information is up to date and great for students to get visuals from other parts of the world. SOFTSCHOOLS.COM/SOCIALSTUDIES Contains many different social studies related quizzes. OURDOCUMENTS.GOV This website contains 100 milestone documents compiled by the National Archives and Record Administration. EYEWITNESSTOHISTORY.COM Contains many snapshots into world and US historical events. Contains quotes, pictures, film clips, and more. Very comprehensive! iCIVICS.ORG Teaches students civics and world politics through gaming. Students can match up against friends or against other online players. Science SCI SCIENCE APP This app is free, and has all kinds of short videos about high interest topics for students. These could be used to integrate other subjects for fast finishers, or as enrichment for students. With this app, students have a choice in what they are learning. NASA APP NASA’s official app has space images and videos, a calendar of their missions, and a launch schedule. You can also tap on satellites and learn about how and why they were launched into space. Inspiring to future astronauts! TOPDOCUMENTARYFILMS.COM Also great for social studies, this website features many documentary films by topic. Films about the environment, robotics, and more are featured. Miscellaneous KAHN ACADEMY Streaming videos for most content areas which provide instruction much like the classroom. Great for flipping the classroom! EDUCREATIONS APP Both teachers and students are able to write on a “whiteboard” as they record their voice. Once you have created an account, you are able to email the video, link it to a Facebook page or Twitter, or get a link to embed in another web page. This could be excellent for struggling students and/or those who are absent. Having students “teach” on these videos also reinforces the knowledge they have as well. MY HOMEWORK APP This free app acts as a planner for students who tend to lose their homework or are uninterested in traditional planners. Homework and assignments can be added for multiple classes. Parents can get log-ins also to keep track of what their child is doing throughout the day. QR CODE GENERATORS/READERS Many free websites and apps are available to create your own QR code reader. These can be used in a myriad of ways. One example: A QR code scavenger hunt! iTOOCH APP This app has 14 titles available for free, which basically covers math, ELA, and science for grades 1-8. There is a version that can be paid for, however, there are plenty of interactive practice and test questions on the free app. TOODOO.COM Kids can create cartoons about anything for any subject. This would be good for a wide range of ages. Free to use. QUIZSTAR.COM You can create quizzes, have scores emailed to you, and get all types of data to display student performance in real time. CAMSCANNER APP You can turn your ipad or iphone into a document scanner with this app. CamScanner is a free app that allows you to scan items and then store them as PDF files. DROPBOX This app give you access to your Dropbox cloud storage account. It is like having your office file cabinet on your iPad. You can also set this account up to automatically receive any photos you take with your iPhone/iPad. REMIND 101 Remind101 provides a safe way for teachers to send text message alerts and stay in touch with parents. It is 100% free and is used by over 500,000 teachers, students, and parents to send millions of messages every month. FAST, SAFE, and EASY. CLASSDOJO This app/website allows teachers to improve behavior in their classrooms quickly and easily. It captures and generates data on behavior that teachers can share with parents and administrators. TYPE N TALK A fun app which can help teachers spice up instruction in the classroom. If students are having particular trouble paying attention, type in what you want to say and have it come out sounding like one of their favorite celebrities or another silly voice. EXIT TICKET Assists teachers to see a students who is doing well and those who need help with their school work. It provides immediate feedback. GRAMMAROPOLIS This is where grammar lives! Hailed as a Schoolhouse Rock for the 21st century, Grammaropolis uses the parts of speech as animated characters who personalities are based on roles they play in the sentence. From the shady pronoun always trying to take the noun’s place to the motherly conjunction who just wants everyone to get along. Grammaropolis achieves the impossible: Making learning grammar fun! FLOCABULARY.COM This website is cross-curricular. It contains rap videos about subjects such as Ancient Egypt, the coordinate plane, or the elements of a story. PRESENTATION AIDS (LINKS BELOW) Blendspace-Allows for instantaneous assessment so students can reach learning targets. Present.me-Creates online presentations which can be shared as if you were in the same room. A blog listing the "Ten Best Free Screen Recorders". Makes great presentations! Contains built in libraries of music, backgrounds, and more. Great for younger students. PLICKERS.COM Allows the teacher to collect real time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. |
